He was an Indian cricketer who played in Test matches for India. Amarnath is considered one of India's greatest batsmen of all time. He was the first Test centurion for India, and the first Indian batsman to score a Test century on foreign soil.
Amarnath was born in Lahore, British India (now in Pakistan), into a Punjabi Hindu family. Talking about his family Lal Amarnath's wife Kailash Nath was from Jammu and Kashmir. His son Deepak Amarnath is a former Indian cricketer who has played first-class cricket.
He made his first-class debut for Northern India against Southern Punjab in the Ranji Trophy in 1926. He played for India in three Tests on their 1932 tour of England, scoring 62 on debut at Lord's. He scored India's first Test century in the second Test at Old Trafford, becoming the first Indian batsman to score a century in England.
He toured England again in 1936 and scored 752 runs at an average of 54.42, including three centuries. He also played in India's first Test match after the Second World War, against England at Bombay in November 1946. He scored India's first Test century after the war, in the second innings of the match. He played his first Test match in 1933 and went on to play in 11 Test matches for India. He scored three centuries in Test cricket, including a score of 118 against England in 1936, which was the first Test century by an Indian batsman. He also played first-class cricket for Northern India and captained the team on several occasions. He retired from cricket in 1949.
Lala Amarnath was a versatile cricketer who was equally adept at batting, bowling, and fielding. He was a powerful batsman and was particularly known for his hook shot. He was also a useful bowler, bowling both medium pace and spin. He was one of the best fielders of his time and was known for his quick reflexes.
